If you haven’t heard of the Yulin festival, buckle up your seat belt because you’re about to be in for a real emotional roller coaster.
When I found out about China’s annual Yulin festival, I literally cried. I still cry every time I think about it. The thought of my furry best friend in a situation like this is too much to bear. I’m not even kidding, this is the gnarliest thing I think I’ve ever seen.
I’m sorry to be the one to share this terrible information, just be prepared because it’s intense.
Every year, roughly 10,00 dogs are dragged to Yulin, slaughtered, and served up as meals. Some come from as far as 1,000 miles away. They are often kept in inhumane cages, beaten, tortured, and starved to the point that most of them die from starvation, dehydration, or disease on their journey.
At the Yulin festival, they are tortured and beaten in public, often boiled alive. “Salesmen” wedge sticks into dog’s bodies while they are still alive, scrambling, terrified, trying to get away. They hold them up for everyone to see. They do this all while other dogs watch terrified.
This needs to stop. Reading it is one thing, seeing it is another. Vice recently did an extensive story on Yulin. I’ve posted it below.
Warning, this video is VERY graphic. It’s hard to watch the abusive reality that dogs are being subjected to.
It’s not only inhumane, it’s unhealthy and even dangerous.
“China has the world’s second highest incidence of rabies in humans. And according to China’s ministry for public health, Guangxi province, where Yulin is located, has the largest number of cases in China, while Yulin is one of China’s “top ten cities” for cases of human rabies.” – CNN
“For, Guangxi province, where the festival is based has the highest levels of rabies in China and Yulin, with 338 deaths from the disease between 2002-2006 alone.” DailyMail
Eating dog meat is not the exact cause of rabies in humans, it’s the handling and slaughter of vast numbers of unvaccinated dogs which exposes traders and can then be spread. Dog meat providers often use stray dogs, or dogs that are in such poor conditions before slaughter and eventually sale, that they are infected with rabies or other dangerous diseases.
One brave women is doing something to try to end this cruel reality. Her name is Yang Xiaoyun. This year, Ms Yang has saved up 50,000 Yuan (£5,000), and travelled 1,652 miles from her home town Tianjin to Yulin to save the condemned animals. She is going to rescue them and take them to safe house. Ms Yang last year spent 150,000 Yuan (£15,178) saving 360 dogs and dozens of cats from the festival.
Ms Yang calls the safe house where she cares for these dogs, the Common House and is now home to more than 200 cats and over 1000 dogs.
Wow, just wow. As a dog owner I have to admit I couldn’t watch the whole video. As a realist I know that many countries eat dog and cat, things I couldn’t begin to think of eating, right now. I can not, in good faith, say that if I got hungry enough and I could not find another food source, that I wouldn’t…..as disgusting as it sounds.
My dad did a tour of duty in Korea (clean up after the actual war was over) and a tour in Vietnam, he had stories of the locals in both eating dog and cat, so even as a child I had heard of it.
I have talked to other Vietnam Vets who have told me stories of being pinned down for days in buildings and were reduced to eating rats. Sometimes circumstance can force us to do what we had found unthinkable before.
Now having said all that, although I can understand that you have to eat what you can get, I find absolutely no reason to treat these animals they way they are being treated. We eat cow, chicken, pig, etc., and we have never found a need to treat these animals in such a manner.
There are many other ways to kill these animals that is quick and nearly painless. I have to wonder what they feel is the need to torture these animals like they do. I wonder if they are getting some kind of rush doing this? Do they think they are showing some kind of superiority because they are able to torture them?
This is sad. It is unnecessary. It seems to me that they are being cruel just to be cruel. I really don’t have anything else to say.
@jlriggs57aol-com yes it’s absolutely disgusting! I too understand that in dire situations people sometimes need to eat animals they might not normally eat. But torture for sport is just wrong and disgusting. Something is wrong with these people.
