@Jiesizhao The government has to get their piece. I’m just surprised they are willing to go after an industry their base cherishes so dearly. My guess is they think poor people already don’t matter because they already can’t afford it. And rich liberals are too dumb to notice because they already pay stupid high prices.
DC is supposed to be the Capital of the free world and a bastion of liberty. In reality, the District is besieged by government intrusions and regulations that hamper individual rights at every turn, including the imposition of photo-enforced speeding violations and the ban on concealed carry (both regulations are questionable violations of individual Constitutional rights and have been struck down by several courts around the nation).
The latest installment of DC’s crusade to put a damper on individual freedom is the 5.75% sales tax imposed on health club memberships including gyms and yoga studios – effective tomorrow, October 1, 2014.
This tax was ratified under the guise of “the first big tax cut in DC in 15 years” in the overall budget ratified by DC officials, whereby businesses are supposedly going to get a tax break. Don’t get me wrong – I’d be the first in line to repeal the corporate tax, which is driving our businesses overseas and ultimately passing off added costs onto consumers. But is taxing health and wellness really the solution?
This wellness tax is laughable. DC officials admit “the District is relatively healthy compared to the rest of the country,” and the city is fairly health-conscious and youthful. Gyms, yoga studios and other health centers are present around every corner and historic monument in DC. So how does DC expect to jumpstart businesses when customers are now going to be taxed (read: disincentivized) on a good/service that wields a fairly large presence in DC’s business community?
Not to mention, the concept of taxing health and wellness is simply absurd and counterproductive to society. First, we are taxed on soda because it leads to obesity, and now we are taxed for wanting to be healthy. Does it ever end? I just want to practice yoga in peace.
Who else is sick of government sticking their hands into our lives at every turn?
They are going to tax everything they can figure out to tax to pay for the socialism they have started. Don’t be surprised if you get taxed for walking, sitting, breathing, crossing your legs, not crossing your legs, eating with a utensil, eating with your fingers, etc. Socialism is a huge hole that you fill with money and the more you throw in the bigger the hole gets, the hole never stops getting bigger, neither does the taxes it takes to fill the continuously bigger socialist hole.
